Description

According to the Pennsylvania SPCA, it costs the organization 4.5 MILLION dollars annually to serve its community and its purpose of ensuring the safety and well-being of animals through rescuing abused and neglected animals, educating the community so that the dogs and cats can remain with their forever families, and offering low-cost health care for families who may not otherwise have the financial means to afford these expenses. The PA SPCA is not affiliated with the ASPCA and they do not receive any federal or state funding. Humane law enforcement officers are responsible for 22 counties in Pennsylvania and rescuing abused and neglected animals, investigating these cases so that charges may be brought upon those responsible for the abuse and neglect, and also providing vet services to these counties. The PA SPCA also provides for and looks after animals that are referred to as "protective custody animals," where they have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect, but the investigation or court date where the charges are explored may still be pending. Investigations like this can result in these poor dogs and cats spending several months, which may even lead to years, in the shelters before it can be determined if the animals will be available for adoption. Although the animals may be greatly cared for by the shelter facilities and given plenty of attention by volunteers and employees, every pup and kitty longs for and deserves a forever home full of love and life.

With the PA SPCA also covering Lancaster County, anyone with knowledge of the term "puppy mills" can imagine how busy and how high in demand the officers of the PA SPCA are in Lancaster County alone. In the middle of September 2015, there was a case where the PA SPCA recused 18 puppies from an unlicensed puppy mill in Lancaster County and were able to respond to the scene quickly and effectively. While this is one of many cases, it brings to light just how much an organization like this needs our help. Alice was purchased from a puppy store in NJ, but had been brought over from Pennsylvania. All indicators of Alice's poor health as a pup, lack of official vaccination records and breeder information, as well as other factors strongly suggest that Alice came from a puppy mill in Lancaster.

While we may not have time to drive out to Pennsylvania and volunteer, and we may live in other states or even other countries, we can help educate others about this very serious issue so that people will learn to "adopt not shop" when it comes to welcoming new family members with "tails" into their homes and into their hearts. To support this cause, Alice will be donating $5.00 from each book purchased directly from our website during the months of January 2021-December 2021 to the Pennsylvania SPCA to help support their efforts to rescue animals from cruel, inhabitable living conditions that no living being should be subjected to. This will also assist the PA SPCA in caring for these rescued, sweet souls, while they seek to find them a loving, forever home. Alice will personally autograph each book and will personalize your copy upon request!
