Our Story

After doing a lot of research, I found that animals have not only assisted in the process of overcoming addiction, but also in maintaining sobriety. Their unconditional love and support is something a lot of us humans take for granted. But just as the family as a unit is affected by a family member's addiction-the pets are a part of the family. I thought it would be interesting to try and view things from a dog's perspective in a home where the family has experienced trauma and where a parent was suffering from alcohol addiction. Working in the field of child welfare the past few years, it has come across my mind on many occasions when I initially meet the families in their homes: If only their pets could talk? What would they say, and would they answer my questions differently? Would they tell me what really goes on in the home behind closed doors? And most importantly, would they ask for help? It is so unfortunate that the most honest and unconditionally loving creatures on this earth are unable to communicate in a human language. This story was created in the hopes of giving those animals a voice; and to inspire change in those who have not yet realized they have the strength to change- by shedding light on the negative impact of their substance abuse from the perspective of one family member who is incapable of humanely sharing theirs, like Alice.
